  1. Mac Format Apfs
  2. Apfs Format On Windows

In my MacBook Pro mid-2010 running High Sierra 10.13.6, I'm upgrading the drive to a 1 GB SSD (SanDisk 3D SSD). I replaced the drive, booted with another external backup drive, formatted the new internal SSD to APFS, and then used Disk Utility to restore the old drive to the new.

Mac Format Apfs

I am trying to upgrade the Samsung EVO SSD I put into my MacBook Pro 2012 to APFS so I can upgrade to Catalina. I'm currently running Mojave. In Recovery Mode, the standard instructions on the internet are to select the drive, and click on APFS from the Edit menu. Below are three examples of how to erase the drive and create a APFS volume named MyVolume. You only need to follow one of the examples. The commands given below create a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, then reformat to APFS. Diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ dummy GPT disk0 diskutil apfs create disk0s2 MyVolume. The MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) won't boot because it can't find the system software (flashing questionmark folder when trying to boot). I tried to reinstall the system by installing macOS on an external HDD, booting the MacBook Pro from the HDD and trying to erase the internal HDD (APFS) which won't work because of the following error.

Format

This process converted the SSD to regular Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting. When I select either the drive or the volume and go to Edit > Convert to APFS, it is greyed out. https://ameblo.jp/guetratortoo8/entry-12649452135.html. This happens whether I boot from the internal SSD or the old drive externally (both High Sierra).

If you can't decide between APFS vs Mac OS Extended for your drive, you should consider your use case first. The newer APFS format is better for some types of drives, including SSDs, while Mac OS Extended is great for older drives and macOS versions. Here's a run-through of the pros and cons of both to help you decide.
